The old EU lost me at the end of The New Jedi Order. I guess I had had enough. Now that the new canon is in place, and all that stuff has fallen to legends, I find myself picking up the new EU.
I haven't jumped into the comics so much (because the comics are a visual media, I feel like they have to create these outrageous scenarios so that it looks pretty panel after panel), but I am on board with the novels. I'm most interested in finding out what the hell happened between ROTJ and TFA, though not much of that has been addressed yet. "Aftermath" was a mess. Every other chapter it bounced to somewhere else in the galaxy and it screwed up the narrative of the story. Actually... I think I liked all the times it jumped OUT of the main narrative since they all dealt with something familiar. "Bloodlines" was a decent Leia-centric book that got into the politics of the New Republic. It fills in a missing piece of what the First Order is, and how Leia became a General of the Resistance as opposed to a Senator of the Republic.
There are a couple gems in the OT timeline too. I found myself enjoying "Tarkin" and "Lost Stars" very much. "Tarkin" was weird because I wanted him to win, even though he's capable of mass genocide. But it fills in the gaps in Vader and Tarkin's relationship from the Clone Wars "Citadel" arc to ANH. "Lost Stars" was fun too in that you got the story from the boots-on-the-ground level of both the Rebels and Imperials.
